Your phone number is how customers reach you. When Google rejects it, shows an old one or won’t let you change it, every missed call goes to a competitor. I’m a Diamond Google Product Expert and I fix phone number problems on Google Business Profile the right way, without putting your profile at risk.
Sound familiar?
Phone problems look simple, but they’re some of the most frustrating issues on Google. If any of these sound like you, you’re in the right place.
You update it, Google says “Not approved” or puts it back, and there’s no clear reason why.
An old number, a previous owner’s number or a random one appeared, and customers call the wrong place.
The phone edit sits in review forever, so you can’t trust what customers see.
Your line has a phone menu or call forwarding, so Google’s code call or text never reaches you.
Please don’t keep changing the number again and again, every edit is another review. Message me first, a quick check costs you nothing.
Google's phone number rules
Most rejected phone edits come down to these rules. Knowing them saves weeks of trial and error.
Your primary number should connect to your individual business location, ideally a local number rather than a central helpline.
You can add a primary number and up to two more, such as a mobile and a landline. Fax numbers aren’t accepted.
The phone number must be under the direct control of the business, not an agency, a directory or a lead seller.
Numbers that send callers to a lead service, a different business or a landing page aren’t allowed.
Premium numbers aren’t acceptable, whatever the caller is charged.
Your phone number belongs in the phone field, never in the business name.
Based on Google’s official guidelines for representing your business and phone number help.
Why phone edits fail
A phone number is one of the strongest signals Google uses to connect a listing to a real business. That’s why it’s careful with changes, and why a rejected edit almost always has a reason you can fix.
Google checks other sources. If your website and directories show a different number, the edit looks suspicious.
Central helplines, some VoIP and forwarding numbers are harder for Google to connect to your location.
If the number is used by, or was used by, another listing, Google may not trust it on yours.
Changing the number several times, or together with your name or address, triggers extra review.
Google can accept public or automated edits that replace your number with an old one.
Automated phone menus (IVR) and extensions can’t receive Google’s verification code call or text.
Call tracking can work, but using it as your only number with no real local number often backfires.
If the profile has a pending verification or policy review, phone edits often wait or get rejected.
What I fix
Whether it’s one rejected edit or a profile showing the wrong number for months, I fix the cause, not just the symptom.
Find out why Google won’t accept your number, fix the cause and get the right one approved.
Remove an old, previous owner’s or incorrect number and lock in the correct one.
Set up your line so Google’s code call or text reaches you, or find another safe route.
Match your number across your website, directories and maps so Google trusts the change.
Use tracking numbers the safe way, so you can measure calls without confusing Google.
Watch for suggested edits and keep your number from being changed by others again.
Before you edit again
A phone number change can look like a business takeover to Google. Please avoid these while we sort it out.
Send me your business name and a screenshot of what you see in your profile. I’ll tell you what’s going on and the safest way to fix it.
How it works
No guessing and no endless edits. Every case follows the same clear steps.
You send me your profile and a screenshot. I check the number, the edit history and any reviews pending.
I compare your number across your website, directories and Google’s data to see why it’s being rejected.
We correct your website and key listings first, so Google sees one consistent number everywhere.
One clean edit, at the right time, with the right setup for verification if Google asks.
I follow up until the right number is live and help you stop it being changed again.
Google reviews every phone edit, and review times vary. Most simple cases are sorted within days. If something else is wrong with the profile, I’ll tell you upfront.
Who you'll work with
I’m a Diamond Google Product Expert for Google Business Profile, the highest level of Google’s Product Experts program. Phone number and edit problems are some of the most common questions I answer in Google’s own community, and Google has invited me to its offices in Japan, Ireland and India.
A phone change done wrong can make Google ask you to verify again, or even trigger a suspension. I fix yours carefully, explain each step in plain words and stay with it until the right number is live.

Questions
Usually because Google can't confirm the number belongs to your business location. Common reasons are a website or directories showing a different number, a call center or forwarding number, a number used by another business, or too many changes in a short time.
Google can accept suggested edits from the public or from other data sources, and these sometimes bring back an old number. Fixing the number at the source, then making one clean edit, usually stops it from coming back.
You can add one primary phone number and up to two additional numbers, such as a mobile and a landline. Fax numbers aren't accepted.
Many businesses do, but it has to be set up carefully. The number must be under your control and connect to your business, and keeping your real local number on the profile as well is the safer approach. I'll help you set it up without confusing Google.
It can, especially if you change other key details at the same time. That's why I plan the change first and make one clean edit, with your line ready to receive a code if Google asks.
Automated phone menus, extensions and some call forwarding setups can't receive the code. Using a direct line for the code, or another verification method if offered, usually solves it.
On its own, rarely. But a number change combined with other big edits, or a number linked to a lead seller or another business, can trigger a review or a suspension. That's why it's worth doing carefully.
